MTV Europe Music Awards 2024: A Night of Music, Tributes, and History-Making Moments
The 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) took place at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, marking a return to the UK for the first time since 2017. Hosted by Rita Ora, it was a night filled with emotional moments, standout performances, and historic wins. Here’s a recap of the most notable moments and winners.
Rita Ora’s Tribute to Liam Payne
Rita Ora, hosting the event for the third time, delivered a moving tribute to the late Liam Payne. Dressed in a dark suit, Ora’s voice faltered as she paid homage to the former One Direction member, whom she collaborated with on the 2018 hit For You. “Liam Payne was one of the kindest people that I knew,” Ora said, calling for a moment of remembrance. Photos of Payne were shown on screens in the arena, accompanied by a clip of One Direction’s Night Changes.
Taylor Swift’s Record-Breaking Night
Taylor Swift, though absent from the ceremony, continued her impressive streak by making history as the first artist to win the “Best Artist” award three times in the event’s 30-year history. Swift also won “Best Video” for her collaboration with Post Malone on Fortnight, “Best US Artist”, and “Best Live Act”. In a video acceptance speech, Swift expressed her gratitude: “I am coming to you from the Eras tour, and I’m so sad that I can’t be with you tonight. But thank you so much for these amazing awards.”
Swift’s absence was noted as she was in Kansas City, cheering on her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, ahead of resuming her Eras tour in Canada.
Benson Boone Steals the Show
The night’s opening act featured US singer-songwriter Benson Boone, who stunned the audience by performing at a piano suspended above the crowd. He later descended to accept the award for “Best New Artist”, admitting, “I was extremely unprepared for this… A couple of years ago, I found my voice, my passion, and my career.”
Raye Shines on Home Turf
Raye, crowned “Best UK and Ireland Act”, was among the performers in Manchester. She energized the crowd with performances of Escapism and Body Dysmorphia, showcasing why she remains a powerful force in the UK music scene.
Tyla’s Triple Triumph
South African artist Tyla confirmed her superstar status by winning three awards: “Best R&B”, “Best Afrobeats”, and “Best African Artist”. Speaking to BBC News, she said, “I’m honoured and humbled.” Tyla also delivered a memorable performance that resonated with the global audience.
The Legends Take the Stage
Busta Rhymes, recipient of the “Global Icon” award, reflected on his journey, recalling summers spent in Morecambe, north-west England, during his childhood. His nine-minute acceptance speech followed an energetic medley of his hits, marking a high point of the evening.
The Pet Shop Boys were named “Pop Pioneers”, adding a nostalgic touch to the night. Meanwhile, Manchester legends Shaun Ryder and Bez of Happy Mondays provided an unscripted moment, with Bez’s antics amusing both the crowd and Ora during an introduction of K-pop group Le Sserafim.
Other Notable Wins and Performances
Ariana Grande took home “Best Pop”, while Eminem secured “Best Hip-Hop”. The K-pop scene was represented by Jimin, who won “Best K-pop”, and Peso Pluma claimed the title for “Best Latin”. Lisa, with her collaboration New Woman alongside Rosalía, won “Best Collaboration” and also earned the “Biggest Fans” award.
