Tulsi Gabbard Accepts Role as Director of National Intelligence under President-Elect Trump
Former Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard expressed her gratitude and excitement after President-elect Donald Trump appointed her as the next Director of National Intelligence (DNI). Speaking on her new role, Gabbard stated, “I was grateful and honored to accept President Trump’s offer to serve our country and support his objective to defend the safety, security, and freedom of the American people.”
Gabbard, who served four terms in the House as a Democrat and ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, made headlines when she left the Democratic Party in 2022. Although she had distanced herself from her former party, she officially joined the Republican ranks earlier this year. Her endorsement of Trump in August signaled her support for his vision and approach, further solidifying their political alignment.
In an interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters, Gabbard expressed optimism about the future. “The amazing thing is, what I hope the American people are feeling is a sense of hope,” she said. Gabbard noted that despite the election being over, the public’s engagement remains strong. “They’re really looking forward to making sure that their voices are continued to be heard as President Trump takes office.”
The selection of Gabbard, along with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as attorney general, has surprised many in Washington. Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) described the appointments as “bizarre,” noting, “It’s kind of a ‘who’s the last person you would ever imagine should be in a position?’ sort of territory.” Pocan also hinted at possible challenges in securing Senate confirmation for both nominees.
Criticism has been directed at Gabbard’s foreign policy stances, particularly on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. These positions have drawn scrutiny from both major parties, raising concerns about a contentious confirmation process. Addressing the potential resistance, Gabbard told Watters, “There’s going to be resistance to change from the swamp in Washington. I think that’s kind of the point the American people are saying, ‘Hey, stop looking at yourself… Stop focusing on your own power, your own position, your own bank accounts.’”
Gabbard emphasized the need for leaders who prioritize public interest. “How about we have leaders in Washington who are actually looking out for the American people and on every issue across the board?” she said, reinforcing her commitment to advancing a new vision of governance that prioritizes national security and public service.
